Narco Corridos

This painting depicts a murdered narcotraficante in the arms of a popular Mexican folk saint known as la Santa Muerte. This grim reaper-like figure has grown rapidly in popularity throughout Mexico and has become particularly a favorite amongst cartel members. Above these figures is a Catholic Trinity or Trinidad depiction, something common in the New Mexican altar pieces in the early nineteenth century. However, this depiction deviates from the norm in that the three figures are depicted in Mariachi Trio attire equipped with instruments. I call it a Trio-nidad spoof of the classic Trinidad imagery.
