Painter. 

Ioana Villatoro is a visual artist working primarily in oil paint. She was born in Romania and raised between New York City and Southern California, and currently resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After taking a decade-long break from her studio practice to raise a family, she returned to painting full time in 2017. Her work is characterized by expressive brushwork, saturated color, and an intuitive approach that emphasizes movement, atmosphere, and emotional resonance. Drawing inspiration from landscapes and natural forms, her paintings reflect a deep engagement with the materiality of paint and a personal connection to place.

I’m drawn to the way paint moves, resists, and settles, to the act of pushing color across a surface and letting the marks remain visible. Painting is where instinct leads, where thinking softens and feeling takes over. My work is shaped by light, movement, and memory. I’ve lived in New Mexico for the past eight years, and the land here has become a quiet anchor in my practice. I’m drawn to landscapes and natural forms, returning to them as a way of grounding and reorientation. I work intuitively, through loose brushstrokes and vivid color. I try to capture not just how something looks, but how it feels to stand with it, to notice its weight, its movement, its quiet persistence. Nature offers a space of return, a place where the noise recedes and presence can surface.
