"I walk the desert in the early morning, listening for the form and color of each snake. 
Inspired by the Rosy Boa, a non-venomous serpent native to the rocky foothills of the desert Southwest, these hand-painted snakes come forth in batches, much like real snake hatchlings. They belong to a global folk art tradition that uses graphic form and color to illuminate nature's design.  Since childhood, I've experienced synesthesia — a perceptual phenomenon in which I experience sound, language, and physical touch as color. This extrasensory experience offers me kinship with snakes, whose bodies are extraordinary receivers of subtle information. Snakes slither between — between surface and ground, day and night, real and symbolic. Mythologically chthonic beings (connected with the underground, death, and rebirth), they are allies for slithering out of one form and into the next.
Part artwork and part ritual object, each snake finds its human(s) for a specific reason. Do you see yours? "

Comet Sinclair is a transdisciplinary artist whose work dialogues with the material and perceptual underworlds of landscapes. She holds an MFA from the University of Nevada, Lake Tahoe, and a BA from Stanford University. A frequent collaborator, she has shared her work at Burning Man, SFMOMA, California Academy of Sciences, and at galleries and events in the San Francisco Bay Area, Joshua Tree, Hawaii, and the Southwest. She lives and works in the Sonoran Desert.
