My work is shaped by communal collaboration and spiritual practices of Nuevo Mexicanos. I
focus on my family’s history in the land, exploring traditions and the weight of generational
memory. My paintings serve as both a tribute to the people and practices that formed me and a
way to understand how those influences continue to shape my life. Through this work, I look
closely at the ties between family, ritual, and place.

Eliana Barela’s works primarily through painting and wooden sculpture and is a Santera, and
teacher. She was born and raised in Tomé, NM, and received a BA in Studio Arts from the
University of New Mexico in 2025. Their practice is influenced by the broader cultural history,
familial traditions, and exploration of Nuevo Mexicano identity. Eliana continues to show in The
Traditional Spanish Market, various local venues, and group shows.
