The Reliquary Retablo Ring
Hidden in many of the cathedrals in Europe are reliquary rooms. These rooms usually hold magnificent treasures enshrining a bone fragment, a tissue, ashes, dust, wood chippings related to the cathedral’s patron saint. Beneath the rock crystal is a bed of deep red satin velvet upon which twelve loose gemstones, from spinels to diamonds to peridots, sit. The traditional retablos of New Mexico are meant to venerate the sacred, which for me, is the Earth.
