“My folk style body of work started as a pet portraiture side hustle and a way to unwind from my more laborious oil painting technique. Painting folky reliefs inspired by my Slavic tradition connects me to my heritage and homeland in a very grounding way. I gradually expanded out of painting pets and started exploring the same symbolist and mystical concepts I tackle in oil painting in folk style on distressed wood. I enjoy the juxtaposition of the timeless quality of ware and texture of the substrate with cosmic and esoteric concepts.”

Veta Bakhtina’s paintings and illustrations focus on themes of home, nostalgia, and manifestations of infinity in nature through the lens of a Russian-American immigrant. Veta grew up in St. Petersburg, Russia, at the end of the Communist era and credits her exposure to uncharted nature, the rural Russian countryside, and tradition of heritage for much of her inspiration and working style.
