“My childhood memories are a little hazy but I know that I have been drawing for longer than I can remember. One thing I do remember clearly from childhood is learning about the finite. My teachers told me that the sun would burn out. Youth pastors told me hell was real. While thinking about these concepts stole a lot of sleep from me as a child, I learned to fill that newfound time, in the quiet of the night, with drawing and painting. Art was something to fill the time while my mind spun around processing the existential. Art felt right, it felt profound.

I’ve continued to fill that quiet time at night. And despite the downer vibes I try to find room for whimsy.”

Joseph R. Barrett is a self taught multimedia artist. He was born and raised in the mountains of Colorado. In his upbringing he found an endless well of influences that all had their impact on his style: typography, graffiti, religious iconography, neorealist and figurative art, sign painting, nature and photography. The amalgamation that resulted from that blend of influences often lands his work somewhere between graphic art and folk art. Before landing in Albuquerque he spent time in San Francisco where he graduated with a BFA in Motion Picture and Television Cinematography.
