Painter.

Sean Hudson is an Albuquerque-based artist and teacher working at the intersection of painting and sculpture, drawing from the high desert landscape of New Mexico to explore change, perception, and presence. Using oil and acrylic on wooden panels, he builds layered textures and gradients before carving the surface with a hand-held trim router. This process merges the immediacy of painting with the physicality of relief sculpture, allowing marks to function simultaneously as drawing and excavation.

The Prickly Pear and Ocotillo cacti serve as the central subjects and symbolic anchors in his work. Often overlooked, they embody resilience, adaptability, and quiet beauty. By isolating and magnifying their rhythmic forms, he aims to shift perception and invite contemplation, positioning the cactus as a stand-in for both the toughness and tenderness of desert life.

Hudson received his Master of Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico in 2017. His work has been exhibited regionally and nationally, including at Richard Levy Gallery, Smoke The Moon, and The Valley in New Mexico; RedLine Contemporary Art Center in Colorado; Art on Paper NYC; and in New American Paintings No. 129.

A dedicated educator, Hudson teaches painting and drawing throughout the state of New Mexico, including L’Ecole Des Beaux Arts in Santa Fe, Ghost Ranch Education and Retreat Center in Abiquiu, and from his downtown Albuquerque art studio. He has a gift for inspiring personal narratives and unique styles at all levels in the artistic path.
