FUN HOUSE

Lana Scholtz + Rebecca Elise Cook

A funhouse is an autonomous space, where you can wander freely through rotating tunnels and halls of mirrors.  This collection of work from Cook and Scholtz was inspired by a hot day at the state fair; toys, cakes, bootleg characters and technicolor motionsickness. In pursuit of capturing the fair’s fun, these experimentations in painting revealed both artist’s urgency to seek novelty even in domestic spaces. Baking pans transformed into shiny portals, and maps of patterned chaos reveal nuanced and colorful inner worlds. Both artists are using layered imagery- Lana using veiled, transparent layers of paint over structured drawings, and Rebecca using enamel on plexiglass with found objects revealed underneath.
