Jacob Gutierrez

Printmaker. Tintero.

"I grew up praying every single day and as I got older, those prayers started to take on a new form. Throughout my practice, I continue to work in the theme of sanctity and what it actually means. Recently, I’ve started to recall the symbolism I used to read about. I feel the strength of the lambs, the cattle, and many more beings. I see why their symbolism transcends time and culture. I can’t help but look at animals and life around me, and look at them the same way I look at my loved one. These pieces are my attempt to bridge the gap between my traditional New Mexican roots and the world we tend to overlook. I hope to open new perspectives and expand our idea of what community means."

Jacob Gutierrez was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He grew up very close to family and they remain his biggest influence. Jacob graduated from the University of New Mexico with degrees in both Art Studio and Chicana & Chicano Studies. He initially went to school to study Astrophysics, but fell in love with printmaking instead. He chose a path where he could combine his art and culture. On this path he's also picked up skills in both woodcarving and tinwork. Jacob has been a part of group shows, artist talks, and even a solo show. He is also a printmaking teacher to children and likes to work with the community as much as possible.
